What is it?
Viagra is the first medicine in pill format (taken orally) for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction also referred to as impotency. Its scientific name is sildenafil citrate.

How long has it been available?

Viagra is known as a phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It inhibits the PDE5 enzyme, found mainly in the penis, which allows the chemical produced during sexual stimulation, cyclic GMP, to persist. The presence of cyclic GMP leads to increased blood flow and an erection.

What are the risks?
In clinical tests adverse reactions were reported in about 2% of men. The most common reactions were headaches, facial flushing, and upset stomachs.

What is the success rate?
According to the manufacturer, Viagra is successful in improving erections for about 80% of men.
